ML@GT at INFORMS 2020ML@GT Introduces Machine Learning and AI Cluster at INFORMS Conference

Researchers at Georgia Tech are organizing the first-ever machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) cluster at this year’s INFORMS conference. The cluster is being created as INFORMS, one of the major conferences for operations research and analytics is integrating machine learning more fully into its agenda.

Yao Xie and George Lan, associate directors at the Machine Learning Center at Georgia Tech (ML@GT) and associate professors in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISyE) are organizing the new cluster.

The introduction of the new cluster makes sense according to Xie. Currently, there is significant overlap between machine learning, AI, and operations research. Both fields share common cores in optimization, statistics, and applied probability, and many pioneers from the INFORMS community worked on the foundation and applications of machine learning and AI decades ago.

In the last few years, there has been a significant increase in interest in applying machine learning and AI to traditional operations research fields like healthcare, finance, sustainability, and supply chain logistics.

“We hope the new machine learning/AI cluster will enhance the existing connections between INFORMS and machine learning community, further helping INFORMS students and faculty who are working on related areas,” said Xie.

Outside of organizing the cluster, ML@GT will be presenting 13 papers.

INFORMS will take place online Nov. 7 through 13.
